Today's Video Share: "I Confess" by Dora Lachaise
From an attic overlooking Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol (UK), Dora Lachaise produces dark, otherworldly music. After her Danny Elfman-esque debut single Bone Collector, which was picked up by BBC Bristol and Amazing Radio USA, Lachaise dives into electronica for her second single ‘I Confess.’
The song was inspired by a statue of the saint Mary Magdalene, generally portrayed as a ‘fallen woman’ with a wild past. That story isn’t true, but it was used as a warning for girls and women to listen to their fathers and husbands. In ‘I Confess’, Lachaise sets the record straight by retelling the story from Mary’s perspective.
The video itself pays homage to another woman – the Surrealist photographer Dora Maar. While we remember the men from the Surrealist movement – Dalí, Magritte, Picasso – the women have largely been forgotten, unless they were their ‘muses.’ Unjustly so – Maar was an artist in her own right, and made thought-provoking photomontages, which inspired the music video for ‘I Confess.’

Today's Video Share: "Working Woman" by Grace Pettis
"I thought a lot about what to call this album. I tossed around a lot of different titles, pulled from lines I liked or themes the record seemed to have. But in the end, it really had to be called Working Woman because the album, like the song, is not subtle. It's about recognizing and honoring the work that women do in every space in our society. It’s about claiming our own power and place in the world. This record is about the work women do and valuing that work,” says Grace Pettis, explaining the title of her new debut album for MPress Records, Working Woman.
Produced by lauded singer-songwriter Mary Bragg, and mixed by 2x Grammy® award winner Shani Gandhi (Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical), the record features an all-female/non-binary band. The rest of the album credits are female/non-binary as well: co-writers, engineers, photographer, and graphic designer included. Guest contributions come from Indigo Girls (“Landon”), Ruthie Foster (“Pick Me Up”), Dar Williams (“Any Kind of Girl”), The Watson Twins (“Never Get It Back”), Gina Chavez (“Mean Something”) and Mary Bragg (“Paper Boat”).

Today's Video Share: "Between Us" by Michelle Rose
I co-wrote and recorded this song well before I had ever experienced a love relationship that was actually good. My song was based on what I thought a perfect relationship would look like. This past summer, I cast a handsome actor in one of my other music videos, and we began dating. It turned out that he actually does bring me roses on all of our dates, and he treats me like a queen! This video, which he and I planned and acted in together, highlights not just what my fantasy relationship would be like, but shows my life now imitating art. I hope you enjoy the video and the song!
